Community Garden
USA’s first community garden, the Food Bayou, is located behind the Jag Tran Transportation Center by Intramural Fields. From its start in Spring 2015, the Food Bayou brings organic and sustainable food growing practices to the University of South Alabama, engaging students and the community through educational workshops, community outreach, and research. We are committed to using organic growing techniques to provide a venue for alternative growing practices in the Mobile, AL community. Food is grown without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. The garden contains a variety of vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees. Food produced by the garden is donated to the Salvation Army on a weekly basis or is given to students, faculty, and community members that work in the garden. If you are a student, faculty, or community member interested in participating in our garden workdays, workshops, or fundraisers, please contact us via email sustainability@ejly.net
